Services RMFN offers
RMFN recognises the vital contribution rural medical families make to the health of the rural community. In order to support these families, RMFN seeks to promote communication between rural medical families and create a friendship network to lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation that can be experienced.
Services provided by RMFN include:
- Seasonal Newsletters - which contain information on current issues concerning medical families, the ever popular "Potted Profiles", details of forthcoming events, specialised reports, and more. These are distributed to RMFN members;
- Outback Meetings - attempt to reduce the feelings of isolation that come with living in rural and remote areas by bringing together partners of rural GPs in an informal setting. Financial assistance, on application, is available if you wish to organise an outback meeting;

- Meet and Greet gatherings - are designed to welcome new rural GPs and their families and are held across NSW with the assistance of the 17 NSW Rural Divisions of General Practice. Financial assistance is available on application;
- Family Programs at CPD conference - are specifically designed to encourage families to attend the RDN GP education conferences held around NSW. If you are wanting action, stimulation, peace and quiet, quality child care, drinking buddies, latte pals, blue pools and sun beds, then look out for our next RMFN event;
- Spouse retraining/education grants - provide financial assistance for spouses of GPs who wish to undertake retraining, participate in further education, or pursue a hobby.
- Crisis Assistance - is available for rural GPs and their families during times of stress or serious illness within the family. The RMFN Hotline is a freecall (1800 813 069) and will lead you to the RMFN Coordinator. The CRANA Bush Crisis Line is also a freecall (1800 805 391) and offers confidential telephone counselling and debriefing for remote area health professionals and their families. Another avenue for health related issues is the Doctors' Health Advisory Service (02 9902-8111) which is an independent, confidential service that offers 24 hour professional medical help to GPs, their families, colleagues and medical students in NSW, in times of personal crisis.
- Working Holidays for Undergraduates (HUGS) - provide an opportunity for medical students to experience rural medical family life, a variety of medical and rural challenges, working closely with a rural community, future employment opportunities, a working holiday with minimal financial costs;
- Database of RMFN members - is continually updated and provides a comprehensive list of all RMFN members. Individual members are encouraged to update their contact details themselves via the My RMFN page with their login name and password.
- Members online chat room & online forum - is available to RMFN members who have a login and password. This allows a subject to be discussed in a secure online environment with other RMFN members. To obtain a login and password, please contact RMFN.
RMFN values your feedback and ideas. For further information on any of the above points, please call the RMFN Coordinator, Liz Wragge on 02 6545 2461 and think about becoming a member,
If this is your first encounter with RMFN NSW. We look forward to hearing from you!
